Ever since I can remember, my mother made a variety of cookies for the Christmas season. She started in November and froze the cookies until needed. Then, when visitors arrived, or for family meals, she would make a huge arrangement on her red depression glass platter. When I was very young, she made the cookies pictured below, in addition to the Apies Cutouts, Glazed Fresh Apple, Chocolate Chip, Swiss Almond Cookies, Buttery Shortbread and Chocolate Filled Thumbprints. When my grandmother was alive, she gave us batches of her Sand Tarts and Heavy Cookies to add to the collection. Through the years, she added a few new cookies and replaced some of the original favorites. I took over the tradition years ago and, although I don't always make as many different cookies and have added a few more varieties, we are still famous with family and friends for our offerings. As a matter of fact, we wouldn't dare show up at some events without that platter. Whichever cookies you choose to make, I hope you will enjoy these delicious morsels as much as my family and I.
