MAKES APPROXIMATELY 2 CUPS
Steak sandwiches differ from region to region. In Pennsylvania, the most popular are made with chopped or very thin slices of beef that are browned and then topped with, or simmered in, a tomato sauce, served in a crusty hoagie roll, with or without cheese, grilled onions and hot or mild peppers. There are some canned sauces made specifically for steak sandwiches that are fairly good, but I haven't seen them for years. This is our favorite homemade recipe.
INGREDIENTS
Heat oil in medium saucepan over medium heat. Add celery, green peppers and onions; sauté until slightly tender. Add remaining ingredients; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until slightly thickened, about 1 hour. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. (Sauce may be kept in refrigerator for up to a week or frozen for several months.)
