http://teriskitchen.com/oktoberfest.html Revised for 2012 |
Oktoberfest originated in 1810 in Munich, Germany, as part of a royal wedding celebration. It became so popular that it is now celebrated in many areas throughout the world, especially those with a substantial population of German decent. In modern-day Munich, the festivities, which include music, dancing, lots of beer and great food, last about sixteen days. In this country, it appears to be celebrated any time in October.
I have chosen recipes that are as authentically German as possible. Some are Pennsylvania Dutch, which are based on my family's German cooking heritage but revised out of necessity to incorporate foods available to immigrants in this country. I posted two of my favorite German menus, one a traditional dinner with Sauerbraten as the entree, the other a more casual menu featuring Brat and Sauerkraut Sandwiches. In addition, I made lists of main dishes, side dishes and desserts that provide alternate choices for a variety of events throughout the month. If you do not find what you are looking for, you can visit my Pennsylvania Dutch Recipes page, where you will find even more German-inspired recipes. Additionally, you can use the search box above or browse the Recipes Files for other dishes to round out the meal. With so many choices, you can celebrate Oktoberfest and feast all month long.
