I love potlucks, whether for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. There is always a wide variety of foods from which to choose and I usually find something new and interesting. For this page, I have listed some of my favorite recipes that travel well and are not usually found on a buffet, as well as my versions of dishes that are common potluck items. Many are quick and easy, some take a bit more time, most of which is hands off cooking time. Additionally, I have included shared recipes submitted by visitors that are appropriate for potluck gatherings. This list does not include all of the recipes posted on the Teri's Kitchen web site that could be served at potlucks. Notably missing are sandwiches, wraps and pizza, all of which are appropriate depending on the theme of the dinner. If you don't find what you are looking for, use the search boxes located at the top and bottom of the page, or go the the Recipe Files to browse through specific categories.
There are a few guidelines to follow when planning and deciding what to contribute to a potluck dinner. The host or hostess should monitor the types of foods, requesting a balance of appetizers, salads, main dishes, side dishes and desserts, while taking into consideration people with food preferences, especially vegetarians. Try to choose recipes that are good warm or at room temperature unless you will be able to keep them hot in a thermal tote, slow cooker or chafing dish, or reheat in a microwave or oven before serving. I did not include tossed green salads, but they are appropriate and there should be at least one on the table. Package the chilled greens, vegetables, dressing and any other ingredients separately and place in a small cooler, then assemble and toss just before serving. The same can be said for any chilled fresh fruit or vegetable dishes.
