Garlic Bread or Toast

Make in any amount

There are many variations of garlic bread. This is not so much a recipe as suggestions for several different preparation methods.

Garlic bread usually begins with a good French, Italian or other rustic loaf, white or whole wheat, depending on personal preference, homemade (see homemade examples in the similar and related recipes) or store-bought. The loaf can be sliced horizontally, down the middle, or sliced vertically into individual portions. For the topping, spread with softened butter or olive oil. Sprinkle generously with garlic powder, fresh minced garlic, or spread with roasted garlic. Add some freshly grated Parmesan cheese and, if desired, freshly ground black pepper. Chopped fresh herbs, such as parsley, can be added before or after baking. Bake in a 350° oven until lightly browned. If making the halved loaf, cut into individual portions after baking.

When I only need a few portions, I toast sliced bread in the toaster oven, then immediately drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with garlic powder or rub with the cut side of a halved garlic clove, and season with Parmesan and pepper. Serve warm or room temperature. No matter how you make it, garlic bread is a quick, easy and delicious side dish that complements many meals.
