Cinnamon Apple Sauce
(Shared recipe submitted by William "Uncle Bill" Anatooskin.)
Ingredients
- 1-1/2 cups water, divided
- 1/4 cup cinnamon heart candies
- 8 large apples, preferably tart, peeled, cored and sliced
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup hot-tamale jelly beans; each cut into 3 pieces
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
In a small saucepan, add 1 cup water and cinnamon candies and bring to boil; reduce heat and simmer for about 3 to 4 minutes or until candies are fully dissolved. In a large cooking pot, add sliced apples and the dissolved candies along with the remaining 1/2 cup water and cook until apples are soft; mash apples. Add sugar, hot-tamale jelly beans and lemon juice and cook for about 5 minutes or until most of the jelly beans are dissolved. (Some of the jelly beans may not dissolve totally and this is okay. They will be light in color.) Refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with ice cream, cream, whipped cream or just as is.
