Chopped Steaks with Mushrooms and Red Wine Sauce (Steak Uno Momento)

Serves 6

This was one of my mother's recipes. She first made it back in the days when chopped steaks, also called cubed or minute steaks, were very popular. The title, Steak Uno Momento, translates to 'Steak in a Moment'. That is an appropriate name for this recipe, since it is a quick, easy and very tasty Italian-inspired main dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 6 lean chopped steaks
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Season steaks with salt and pepper, then add to the pan and sauté until browned on both sides and cooked through. Transfer steaks to a dish and keep warm. Add garlic to skillet. Sauté until softened. Add mushrooms and sauté until lightly browned. Add the flour and stir to blend well. Stir in the wine and the oregano. Return the steaks to the skillet and cook until the sauce is thick and bubbly. Serve immediately, spooning mushrooms and sauce over each steak.
