Serves 8
This is an excellent dessert recipe that came from my mother. You must try it. It is not a traditional cobbler because the dough is more like a cake batter than a biscuit, but it seemed the most appropriate classification. You can use any baking apples you like, but I would definitely mix in some Granny Smith for tartness and texture. Apple cobbler is equally appropriate for a family dessert or a potluck event.
Preheat oven to 375° F. Combine apple slices, granulated sugar and water. Place in bottom of a buttered 9-inch square baking dish. Cream together the brown sugar and butter; add milk, flour and vanilla. Mix well; fold in nuts. Pour over apples. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until bubbly. Serve warm or room temperature, with cream or vanilla ice cream, if desired.
Notes: This can be made in an 8-inch square baking dish. Reduce apples to 5 cups. Generally, 4 large or 6 medium apples will make 6 cups sliced. However, I buy extra just in case I need more. I always have dark brown sugar in my pantry because that is what I use in most recipes. You can use light brown sugar if that is what you have on hand or prefer.
