Hungarian Goulash

(Shared recipe submitted by Susannah Walker.)

Susannah writes: "This recipe was given to my sister back in 1964. Her friend, Mary Molnar, had a visit from her Hungarian mother-in-law, who could not speak a word of English. She was showing Mary and my sister how to make authentic goulash. This is the recipe."

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef, trimmed
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon caraway seed
  • 1/8 teaspoon marjoram
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • Paprika
  • 1 cup water
  • Potatoes

Cube meat. Brown onion in butter; add meat and brown. Add caraway seed, marjoram, garlic, salt and enough paprika to color red. Add water and simmer 2-1/2 hours. Add potatoes and cook until done.
