French Bread

(Bread Machine Recipe)
Makes one 2-pound loaf

If your bread machine has a French bread setting, try making this recipe. If not, you can use the basic bread setting. The bread does not have the texture and crust of an authentic French bread, which is in the similar and related recipes, but is still very good, as well as quick and easy enough to make for a weeknight dinner, especially if your machine has a timed setting.

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 2-1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Add the ingredients in the order given or as indicated for your machine. Use the French or basic bread setting for medium crust. Bake according to manufacturer's instructions. Cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
