In a large pot, add the beans and cover with water. Bring them to a boil, reduce heat and cover.
In a large plastic container with a lid, place the coating ingredients. Cover the container with the lid and shake well to combine.
Add the beef to the container and shake to coat it. Heat some oil in a large skillet and add the beef, keeping as much of the flour mixture in the container as possible. Place the smoked sausage pieces into the container and shake. When the beef is about cooked, add the sausage and the remainder of the flour mixture to the skillet. Stir well and add the chopped onions; reduce heat and cover, allowing the onions to soften. When the onions are tender, add the tomatoes, tomato sauce and beef broth. Bring the skillet up to a gentle boil, stirring to prevent sticking. When the mixture has come up to heat, add to the pot of beans and simmer until the beans are tender.
