Betty writes: "I found this recipe in the South Bend Food section of the paper. It was a blue ribbon winner of a grandmother in Niles, MI. I thought that I would pass it along since I have tried it and made six pies since seeing the recipe. It is absolutely great! When in a pinch to make one for a Tri Kappa bake sale, I used the refrigerated pie crust in the dairy case."
Preheat oven to 375° F. For the pie filling, combine dry ingredients and toss with apples. Set aside.
For the crust, cut shortening into flour and salt. Add sugar, vinegar, and egg, tossing after each. Add water a little at a time until mixture forms ball. Roll out on a floured surface and place in pie pan. Fill with apple mixture.
For the crumbs, quickly cut butter into the flour until the mixture resembles oatmeal. Mix in the sugar and oats and spoon over fruit filling. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
