Spicy Oven Croutons

(Shared recipe submitted by Gloria.)

Ingredients

  • 10 slices day old bread, crusts removed if you prefer
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil, more or less as needed
  • Spices of your choice (see notes below)
  • Grated cheese (optional)

Pour oil into a 13x9-inch pan to make an even layer. Cut sliced bread into 1/2-inch cubes and toss to coat evenly with oil. Add a little more oil if necessary. Sprinkle with your choice of spices, tossing them to coat evenly. Bake in a preheated 300° F oven for about 30 minutes or until browned and crispy, turning croutons at least three times to avoid overbrowning. If you desire, after they have baked for 15 minutes or so, add a sprinkling of grated cheese for extra flavor. Use immediately, or refrigerate or freeze for later use.

Notes: Some good choices for spices are paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, seasoned salt, black pepper, celery salt, dried basil, oregano or parsley. These croutons are excellent in onion soup.
